The KOASTAL program is investigating the effects of a once-daily study drug that works in a new way to treat adults living with depression (also known as major depressive disorder or MDD). This study drug is being evaluated to see if it can improve symptoms of depression, including feelings of having less interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy (this is called anhedonia).

Only 3 in 10 people with depression experienced relief of all their symptoms when they used selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) as their first treatment.

Current antidepressants do not fully treat what is called anhedonia (feelings of reduced interest or desire for things you used to enjoy), which occurs in up to 7 out of 10 people with depression.

What you can expect

Participating in the KOASTAL study first involves about 1 month of screening and then 6 weeks when you take the study drug or placebo. After that, you can possibly also participate in a one-year study where all participants receive the study drug. We understand that participating in a clinical trial is a big decision. Talk to your family and doctors or to others who suffer from depression.

You may be able to participate in the study if you:

  • are 18–65 years old
  • have been diagnosed with depression
  • have had symptoms of depression for 1–12 months
  • are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • can provide your consent and can follow the instructions for the study

The study doctors will tell you what you need to do during the study. Participating in a clinical trial is completely voluntary and you can leave the trial at any time. During the KOASTAL study, you receive all study-related care free of charge from a specially appointed care team. You may be able to receive compensation for study-related costs.

Ask your doctor if the KOASTAL trial is right for you

The KOASTAL trial is investigating an investigational drug for once-daily use in depression. This study drug is not currently approved for sale in any country.
